If you were at the Business Meeting on Aug 7, you heard Keith Mendia talking up this great race series that happens at Laguna Seca every year. It is the preeminent race of its kind in the USA, and it’s available for all of us privileged west-coast fans to go see every September. Yes, these are all classic race cars that were the best in the world in their day. Now their proud owners bring them out once a year to remember their heritage and show them off to an admiring public. Some of these cars are worth millions of dollars, because they are so rare and unique. This is a fantastic opportunity to see these cars going at it on a race track. Don’t miss this great opportunity.
People have to apply to get in to this event, and only 500 cars are accepted. The cars must meet authenticity, historical, and mechanical-accuracy standards, so what you see are the best of the best.
For instance, 20 years after earning his second consecutive Formula One drivers’ championship, Mika Häkkinen will be behind the wheel of the 1970 McLaren M8D/3 “Batmobile.” I guarantee you can’t see this car, or this collection of cars, anywhere else.
There is a 1962 Corvette Grand Am, one of only five ever built in 1962 to compete with Ford Cobras, that will be at these races. And in a huge bonus, we are going to have that car at our Corvette Spectacular this year. History comes alive, if you know where to look.
